Fashion & Assistive Tech Challenge Announcement
Fab13ers!
We are celebrating Fab13 with a Challenge on Fashion and Assistive Technology to recognize the ways society embraces digital fabrication in the most intimate way. Technology gets closer, it becomes an extension of our body to assist and augment our abilities, to gather and process our data. How can society adapt and benefit from the democratic access to knowledge and skills found in Fab Labs, to improve the life of people? How does the industry of fashion transform with digital distributed production and communities?
We call on the participants of Fab13 to demonstrate the power of creation through visionary prototypes and innovative concepts. During the conference days makers, inventors, thinkers, and innovators will have access to the Super Fab Lab in order to develop their projects, ideas and technologies to prescribe the impact of wearables, digital fashion, and assistive technology, through digital fabrication and global collaborations.
All projects will be presented on Saturday at the main stage of Fab13Festival and we are preparing great prices for the winning teams.
How can I participate:

Education: How do we envision the future of education
It is an admitted fact that education is experiencing challenging moments in all conventional teaching models and how they are being inserted within a concrete way to all sort of new rules that society and culture are generating by. The introduction of cross-cutting variables in educational models, the freedom and self-management of education brought about by the communications revolution, highly flexible educational curriculums and the promotion of 21st century skills are just some of the parameters on table of contemporary education. The debate in this panel proposes to explore where the educational models should be directed and how they should relate to the environment. STEAM, Fablabs, DYD, Hacking, are increasingly recurrent concepts in the educational scene, so what is the future of education?

Working Group Meeting : EDUCATION FOR EDUCATORS

We want to form working groups around needs expressed by the converging education and digital fabrication communities, especially as related to the transition from informal to formal education uses of digital fabrication.  We will discuss goals and pathways forward, covering topics and needs expressed to us thus far such as:

  • Professional development for teachers
  • Learning and tools and processes
  • Modeling and developing a framework for curriculum integration (adding pedagogy and methodology)
  • Implementation of on site modeling and kickstarting a change in mindset and approach (Educators create content for themselves.  Guide them- by creating a program together to start and to model the experience.)
  • Curriculum and activity development
  • Train people to run school labs
  • Cultural connections (EMOSILLA)-- how do we document and encourage cross-cultural experiences?  (connecting schools and students in different countries)
  • Fab Kids-- informal to formal  (could be a platform for experimentation with the all of the above in mind).

Quality Testing In-Field Prototypes Q&A
Humanitarian Makers is a grassroots, global community of makers and humanitarians supporting disaster response. We are in the process of narrowing our focus to enable effective, global engagement. In fall of 2017, we aim to pilot crowd-sourced quality testing of various in-field developed prototypes that are meeting a persistent and/or pressing human need. This will help us understand if this focus provides real value to humanitarians and makers alike. We are “incubated” in Field Ready and together are learning how to effectively support humanitarian hardware prototype development that is appropriate, affordable, available and accessible when and where needed, with a focus on distributed and local manufacturing. As such, we will be delivering a workshop on Quality Testing of In-Field Humanitarian Prototypes at Fab13. This workshop is interactive and hands-on. Participants will hear stories about field engineer efforts to create prototypes in humanitarian settings. Participants will have opportunity to pull from their making experiences to inform how might prototype quality testing be accessible and actionable by the making community and fab lab network (the Q&A). Participants will also be able to walk-through a 3D print of a Field Ready prototype.

Fab City :How To Make It Happen In Your City
Place: Room 1
Working Group: Fab City Bootcamp // How To Make It Happen In Your City *** Goals ***
Kickstarted at FAB7 in Lima by Tomas Diez (Fab Lab Barcelona | IAAC), and now being prototyped in Barcelona, the Fab City project has been providing an overall framework for a long-term transition towardslocally productive and globally connected cities. The initial pledge started in Barcelona at FAB10 with the commitment of the city to produce everything it consumes by 2054, has inspired others to make this transition happen, in an unique collaboration between bottom-up movements and top-down governments and institutions, in cities like: Paris, Amsterdam, Boston, Shenzhen, Santiago, Detroit or the Kingdom of Bhutan. But how does this appealing vision translate in your local context ? How can you bring together the local community while onboarding the municipality and companies ? How should you organize and where should you start ?
Based on 18 months of experience from the Fab City Paris team, now established a local nonprofit gathering 25 member organizations, this workshop aims to give ideas and practical first steps to get the Fab City process started in your city.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two days working on Fab Cities Future

  1. Fab City, a Global Vision with Local Flavours : Lecture (1h) : Through the study we did for the city of Paris, we will present how we worked to make an international benchmark for productive cities and how we defined a specific vision for the city of Paris based on the local characteristics of the communities and local ongoing projects.
  2. Fab City Prototypes: Where Do We Start ? (1h) Presentations of cases of implementations of Fab Cities by various speakers FabCity Prototype: Tomas Diez, Fab City Plymouth: Anne Le Gars, FabCity Amsterdam: Karen Van Der Mooen, FabCity Gran Paris: Mihn Man
And you, how would you deal with that in your city ?
  • Working group to start to map local initiatives and define local flavours in your cities.
  • Working group to start elaborate strategies to implement the process in your city.
  • Working group to start elaborate strategies to implement a prototype in your city.
DAY 2:
  1. Fab City and Fab Citizens: Bringing Everyone Onboard (1h)
In this part we will tell the story of how we built the association, how we engaged local labs and members and how we created the community around the project. We will also explain how we’ve been interacting with the City Council and we will talk about our proposal to implement a locally productive city in Paris. Workshop (2:30h) :
And you, how would you deal with that in your city ?
  • Working group to start to map local initiatives and define local flavours in your cities.
  • Working group to start elaborate strategies to implement the process in your city.
  • Working group to start elaborate strategies to implement a prototype in your city.
Lecture (30mins) : How we are working in Paris to launch a prototype and which initiatives are arising (coliving, fablab building, superlab, public space redesign, etc…).

104 Material cycles step 1 : Crafting Bioplastics
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

We believe in a world where anyone, anywhere can fabricate with the materials around them. Digital fabrication is shifting where and how we can fabricate our physical world. This shift opens a critical need: for local production, we need local materials. We need to move from rigid global supply chains to flexible local networks, from intensive resource extraction to diverse nutrient cycling. Just as other organisms do, we need to learn to use the materials around us.
Our workshop will introduce key tools for using local materials such as bioplastics, natural composites, and recycled feedstock. We introduce a library of open source recipes made from local ingredients. We offer open source tools for measuring material properties, generating data that can be used for simulating the performance of designs made with these materials. We invite you to join us in developing these tools for your Fab Lab and the global network. Circular processes involve prime matter in the loop of design and production. How can we DIY craft our own material in order to design the performance we wish to acquire. How can we use sustainable biodegradable matter and involve the maker culture into making their own materials. In this workshop we will work with bioplastic recipes, kombucha bacterial skin and other DIY recipes to craft our prime materials. DAY1: Make: bio-based and recycled. Explore our library of local materials, how to make and model their behavior.

Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Why we don't learn electronics by showing how we can use it to produce our own tools? Coming up from a broader philosophy that tries to understand how things works instead of being lazy and buying them, you will understand the basics of electronics by making a DIY Oscilloscope. The Oscilloscope will be locally produced using standard Fab Lab equipment, and can be later on further replicated or customized by the participants. During the workshop mini lectures about electronics will be given to let the participant understand what they are doing.

Discrete heuristics: design, make, think and learn with digital fabrication.
¿How can designers -through the use of digital fabrication- make, think and learn in a more exploratory way? How can designers develop more creative processes and designs in a more relational, exploratory and interactive way? This presentation shows from an academic perspective and through the lens of computation - understood as a visual act, not necessarily digital- experiments and projects around the world of interactive digital fabrication and new ways of making where error, imprecision and ambiguity are part of the process.

How to Make Spaces and Things: A pedagogical approach
Room 8

Digital fabrication and design technologies and expertise depend on one human sense, vision, ignoring other senses that could be shaped and used in learning to make. Moreover, pedagogical approaches in fab labs and maker spaces have not yet fully integrated these technologies as design companions; rather, they have been used primarily as tools for idea realization. This workshop introduces a multi-sensory computational model for human-machine making and learning. The model is based on a recursive process of embodied, situated, multi-sensory interaction between the learner, the machines and the thing-in-the-making. This approach depends heavily on computational making, abstracting and describing the making process. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this model, I present a case study from a course I taught recently, in which students built full-scale, lightweight structures with embedded electronics for interactions. This model creates a loop between design and construction that develops students’ sensory experience and spatial reasoning skills while at the same time enabling them to use digital technologies as design companions. The paper shows that making could be used to teach design enabling the students to make judgments on their own and improvise.

Using the Engineering Design Process to Enhance Teaching and Learning in a Fab Lab
Audit 2B

The Fab Lab is the perfect environment to introduce students to the Engineering Design Process. The ability to digitally design a solution to a problem and then fabricate a prototype is at the heart of the Fab Lab experience. Engaging in the Engineering Design Process allows students to come face-to-face with failure in the context of testing the prototype and redesigning the solution. This workshop will help teachers use the Engineering Design Process to contextualize their Fab Lab projects and in turn make the Engineering Design Process come alive for their students.

1. Introduction to the eight steps of the Engineering Design Process
A. Ask

Fab lab “in-a-box” for humanitarian and development context Working Group

The Humanitarian FabKit project aims at scaling-up (to the humanitarian sector) a rapidly deployable set of resources to enable solution development by and for communities affected by natural and manmade disasters (and conflicts and other forms of violence) and also by humanitarian workers in the field. It includes a micro Fab Lab and also other components (digital platform, infrastructure, etc.) required to build a community enabling environment in humanitarian or development settings.

At maturity, the Humanitarian FabKit is planned to be an affordable (<10K$) and open solution that can be entirely made in a Fab Lab (or similarly equipped space) and can be used and adapted for a variety of innovation communities enabling scenarios, deployable in remote and resource scarce settings.

Read our story about the first 2 months of activity of a Humanitarian FabKit deployed, in Greece in a refugee context, with Terre des hommes.

Humanitarian and development work requires solutions adapted to the specific needs and constraints that come with the challenges of remote and hardship settings. Size, cost, volume are all critical factors to carefully consider when deploying an enabling environment such as a Fab Lab in a humanitarian setting. From a recent discussion with Neil Gershenfeld emerged this idea and opportunity of a “Fab Lab made Humanitarian FabKit” that could significantly reduce cost and improve sustainability.

This working group is dedicated to (almost) everything relating to digital fabrication from a Humanitarian FabKit point of view, a short introduction to the Humanitarian FabKit followed by a high profile set of presentations/demos/panel discussions will set the stage, for the breakout groups.

Please note that this working group is allocating a significant portion of the 4 hours to breakout (working) groups.

1. Introduction (30’)
Welcome to the working group. About the Humanitarian FabKit and the opportunities to actually make it in a Fab Lab.

2. Panel: Fab Lab made Humanitarian FabKit (60’)
Setting the stage for the breakout groups including a set of plenary, short, structured discussions:

2.1) “Machines that make” (with Jens Dyvik and Felix Ma) - research that could lead to a flat pack, Fab Lab made, digital fabrication machine with interchangeable end-effectors. Includes the following demos: Small Fab Lab made DigiFab machines (with Jens Dyvik)  & a modular DigiFab machine in a bag (with Felix Ma).

2.2) "Software-hardware interface" (with Neil Gershenfeld) - to support design, automation, and interfacing with machines.

2.3) "Parametric container" (with David Ott & Jean-Marie Durney) - imagine a parametric container system to transport and protect the Humanitarian FabKit and would also be multi-purpose for example could be reassembled into furniture, etc. Developing on Bill Young’s CNC designs to produce a parametric container that can be made in a Fab Lab. Includes a demo of containers with a variation of low tech attachment methods (without Bill Young).

2.4) "Training of Trainers" (with Luciano Betoldi) for digital fabrication and related skills.

3. Breakout groups (120’)
Work time! With the insight gained during the panel and according to everyone's individual interest breakout groups can further develop any of the above topics.

4. Wrap up (30’)
Debrief from the breakout groups, next steps, etc.

FabChain: distributed ledger technologies for the fab lab network
ROOM 3

FabChain: distributed ledger technologies for the fab lab network
Blockchains and cryptocurrencies are opening opportunities to test alternative models for the global economy. Since the publication of the Bitcoin whitepaper in 2008 and the first release in 2009, millions of people have contributed to the operations of this alternative currency, operating on a distributed (peer-to-peer) network, independently of any intermediary operator or trusted authority. . More recently, with the emergence of general purpose blockchains, like Ethereum,  more advanced blockchain-based applications have been created.  These new applications are paving the way to alternative mechanisms of value creation and distribution, which distinguish themselves from the more traditional market-driven approaches adopted by a majority of crypto-currencies.  These new blockchain-based applications allow for the diversification of value exchange between peers, and offer new opportunities to consolidate alternative economies based on the notion of cosmopolitan localism. Given the emergence of new productive models promoted by the Fab Labs global network, these new mechanism of value exchange offer a unique opportunity to test alternative models of value creation and distribution between Fab Labs and the communities around them, using platforms such as Fablabs.io, projects like Fab City and programs offered by the Academany.

The FabChain workshop aims to enroll participants in a meaningful co-design and co-creation process, using blockchain technology in order to elaborate new forms of currency and new mechanisms of value exchange for the Fab Lab network. The workshop will explore the design of tokens and their relations within the community, and will aim to produce the first white paper on blockchains for Fab Labs. In order to address these objectives,we propose the following tracks:
1. Local ecosystem: FabCity Prototypes. We will explore the use of blockchain technology  (including DAOs, tokens, or alternative cryptocurrencies) to promote collaboration between multiple fablabs at the level of the municipality. The goal is to facilitate the transfer of skills and knowledge between multiple centers, and test circular economy models for tangible outcomes and local material flows . The outcome of this track will be used to  to develop the transition from PITO (Product in - Trash Out) to DIDO (Data in - Data Out)
2. Global ecosystem: FabLab Network. We will explore the use of blockchain technology to record contributions and assess responsibilities in the context of open education. The goal is to create a system of value distribution for open source designs, enhanced certification (quality, accuracy), compensation, and tracking contributions for Academany programs. The focus will be on education resources and design processes within the FabLab network.

The workshop will take two complete afternoons, and will require extensive  brainstorming between the participants. The facilitators will translate the outcomes in a white paper, where all contributions will be acknowledged.

204 Material cycles step 2 : Making Measuring Devices

Day 2: Measure: using uTest, a universal testing that can be made in your Fab Lab, we will measure the mechanical properties of materials we made. We will explore how to use this materials data in design simulation.

Bootstrapping FabLabing: Mohammed A. ElRaffieLearn
A quick glimpse on an actual experience of building a mobile FabLab and several FabLabs around Egypt in a year with a budget less than $150K. The experiment revealed many finding on the mentalities of people and how they perceive the benefit of FabLab, and how we can communicate the capabilities of the FabLab in an easy inexpensive way. I wish to put the focus on how a simple FabLab can make a difference. With simple edits and basic understanding of the machine's anatomy, the cost could be dramatically decreased. As well, the human experience of introducing the FabLab to a new community with low purchasing power. Bonus: a quick demonstration of robot building with minimal material and no motors.

Build, Tinker, Hack: Fostering Student Agency by Developing a Sensitivity to Design through Maker-Centered Learning
Audit. 2A

In this interactive workshop session, researchers and practitioners from Project Zero’s Agency by Design initiative will present a series of hands-on activities aimed at promoting student agency in the maker-centered classroom, a concept that they refer to as “maker empowerment.” Central to achieving a sense of maker empowerment is having a sensitivity to the design of one’s world. Using thinking routines developed by the Agency by Design project, participants will consider what it means to develop a sensitivity while making connections to their home teaching and learning environments.

Educational initiatives that emphasize making, engineering, and tinkering are becoming increasingly popular in K-12 education. But what is really worthwhile about design and maker-centered learning? While many have pointed to the STEM outcomes associated with this work, others see greater potential in fostering dispositional outcomes such as student agency and character building through design and maker-centered learning. In this interactive workshop session, researchers and practitioners from Project Zero’s Agency by Design initiative will present a series of hands-on activities aimed at promoting student agency in the maker-centered classroom, a concept that they refer to as “maker empowerment.” Central to achieving a sense of maker empowerment is having a sensitivity to the designed dimensions of one’s world. Using thinking routines developed through the Agency by Design project, participants will consider what it means to develop a sensitivity while having an opportunity to make connections to their home teaching and learning environments.

Fab Lab Management Best Practices
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Managing a Fab Lab is a lot of work. Every lab develops its own practices and many repeat the same mistakes. As Fab Labs are scaling from 1,000 to 1,000,000 in the coming years it is crucial to learn from each other so that this movement has a lasting effect on society.
We want to share know-how and exchange best practices of running a Fab Lab. Furthermore, we present Fabman, a cloud-based tool we developed at Happylab to reduce the work load on lab managers and increase safety.
See how the system works and get access to the cloud. For the workshop, we will work together with Jens Dyvik and show how to integrate his self-built Open Source machine into Fabman.

SHOPBOT: Solidworks to CNC: 2D vs 3D machining
Description: With a 3D rendering CAD software such as Solidworks, one
can view the CAD drawings from multiple angles, test the assemblies, and
even create videos of the completed project.  However, not all projects
need to be machined as 3D objects.  We will analyze a couple of projects
designed in Solidworks and determine whether they should be exported as
2D files (.dxf, eps, ai) and machined with a square end mill bit in
sheet goods, or 3D files (.stl) and machined in 3D with a ball nose bit.
The ShopBot Handibot with FabMo Control software will be our CNC of
choice for this demo.
Diagram of expected setup: We are flexible, as long as the Handibot has
room to work.  I will pre-make samples so we only have to air cut if
noise and dust is a problem.  We have a handout ready to, well, hand
out, with illustrations and work flow.

Distributed Design
Design is a strategic tool to create socio-cultural value, organizing matter and communicating their effects through a specific function that transform our build environment. To design is always a political act. Nowadays, the design has potentially more chances to be close to generated positives transformation within our society by several novel digital fabrication technologies and Internet holistic capabilities to generate more possibilities of social cohesion, expanding the inherent objects capacities to instances that construct systems from themselves. The main idea of this discussion is to provide several points of view in order to interpret how to design is moving from objects to systems

Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

What does it take to build a FabLab? What does it take to make it sustainable? What does it mean to build a network of FabLab? This cooperative board-game is a fun way to take participants through the main concepts and let them simulate operations of a FabLab. Players take turns making actions such as allocating resources along building and developing new labs. Placement of characters (that a participant will role-play) will influence access to resources on different regions. By carefully planning along with helping others will lead the players on increasing their morale, thus succeeding in cultivating the Fablab spirit across the globe. A group discussion will follow after gameplay where participants can discuss about the game and it's correlation to the realities of Fablab, the challenges and issues revolving on a community space for local entrepreneurship.

Fab Labs with impact & Leveraging the Fab Lab network Working Group

As the humanitarian FabKit is specially conceived to address humanitarian needs (education and livelihoods more specifically), topics such as impact become indissociable. For the first proof of concept in Ioannina, Greece, with the NGO Terre des Hommes, the humanitarian FabKit is focusing special attention on female inclusion and is now considering how to assess and measure appropriately the impact of the space in the refugee and local communities.

Read our story and discussion opener about female inclusion in field-based maker space.

The Humanitarian FabKit is a new concept the GHL is applying to humanitarian assistance, the reason why this session is intended to share experiences and capture good practices that could be localized into a humanitarian scenario related to inclusion, impact and the power of the FabLab network.

1. Introduction (30’)
Welcome, introduction to the Global Humanitarian Lab, the Humanitarian FabKit project and the challenges for the working group.

2. Inclusion (60’)
What is inclusion? multiple approaches to inclusion are linked to each specific context. What does it mean inclusion in the humanitarian practice? What does it mean inclusion in the setting of a Fab Lab?2.1)

2.1) Inclusion in the humanitarian practice (by Adriana De Oro)

2.2) Inclusion in the context of FabLabs (by Wendy Neale)

2.3) How do we practice inclusion? Wendy will lead the section to discuss examples that will challenge the way we perceive the practice of inclusion in the FabLab space. (Wendy)

2.4) Measuring inclusion: After sharing different approaches to inclusion, the section will conclude with the question: how do we measure it? What are the important elements Managers take into account to show inclusion results? What are the baselines used as well as the tools? (Adriana)

3. Impact (60’)
Discussing the meaning of impact for FabLab in different contexts. (moderated by Adriana)

3.1) How do we measure “impact” (of a Fab Lab)? What are the standard practices and how could this be translated into the humanitarian practice?

3.2) Use a data model to show how different participants are measuring impact (by Adriana)

4. Impact networks (60’)
What is the role of the networks in reaching the expected impact? How to get connected? This section will explore how networks such as the FabLab community and Humanitarian Makers can interact with the Humanitarian FabKit in order to foster its impact. (moderators: Adriana, Naiomi, & Tomas)

5. Wrap up (30’)
A general sharing opportunity to reflect on the session main takeaways and gather interest from participants who would like to contribute further to advance these projects with the GHL.

FabChain: distributed ledger technologies for the fab lab network

304 Material cycles step 3 : Sharing

DAY 3 : Share your materials and create your own libraries

Making Meaning Mindfully: Developing fab labs to improve the learning environment for all students
Audit. 2B

Digital design and fabrication hold tremendous potential for learning. The technologies enable more access to the deep ideas underlying the curriculum as well as felicitous opportunities for the development of essential socio-emotional characteristics.

Achieving the potential benefits for all students is not merely a matter of installing a lab. Not only must we develop new materials, but we also need to develop new models for schooling based on computation and fab.

We will investigate:
What is now possible?
What are the deep ideas in learning through digital design and fabrication?
How to connect the making to the learning?
What do we need to do to bring such powerful learning potential to all students everywhere?
What are the primary obstacles to enabling such powerful environments for all?
What are the best strategies for implementation in and transformation of learning environments?
What new models for learning through making can we develop?
