Working Group Meeting : EDUCATION FOR EDUCATORS

We want to form working groups around needs expressed by the converging education and digital fabrication communities, especially as related to the transition from informal to formal education uses of digital fabrication.  We will discuss goals and pathways forward, covering topics and needs expressed to us thus far such as:

  • Professional development for teachers
  • Learning and tools and processes
  • Modeling and developing a framework for curriculum integration (adding pedagogy and methodology)
  • Implementation of on site modeling and kickstarting a change in mindset and approach (Educators create content for themselves.  Guide them- by creating a program together to start and to model the experience.)
  • Curriculum and activity development
  • Train people to run school labs
  • Cultural connections (EMOSILLA)-- how do we document and encourage cross-cultural experiences?  (connecting schools and students in different countries)
  • Fab Kids-- informal to formal  (could be a platform for experimentation with the all of the above in mind).

Share with Fabbers the dynamic of the FabLAT KIDS network, so that they can also replicate and teach our workshops.

Scaling a Community of Practice for Education in STEM through Digital Fabrication
Audit 2A
Workshop 1C

Scaling a Community of Practice for Education in STEM through Digital Fabrication; this project aims to catalyze STEM learning in formal educational environments through digital fabrication technologies and practices found in a Fab Lab or makerspace. Year one of the project has two major phases. Phase I is a call for activities and projects to develop a compilation of digital fabrication lessons that have been aligned to standards and adapted for open source distribution. Phase II is experiential leadership cohort of up to 3 schools for a year-long partnership of professional development and curriculum development.

How to Make Spaces and Things: A pedagogical approach
Room 8

Digital fabrication and design technologies and expertise depend on one human sense, vision, ignoring other senses that could be shaped and used in learning to make. Moreover, pedagogical approaches in fab labs and maker spaces have not yet fully integrated these technologies as design companions; rather, they have been used primarily as tools for idea realization. This workshop introduces a multi-sensory computational model for human-machine making and learning. The model is based on a recursive process of embodied, situated, multi-sensory interaction between the learner, the machines and the thing-in-the-making. This approach depends heavily on computational making, abstracting and describing the making process. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this model, I present a case study from a course I taught recently, in which students built full-scale, lightweight structures with embedded electronics for interactions. This model creates a loop between design and construction that develops students’ sensory experience and spatial reasoning skills while at the same time enabling them to use digital technologies as design companions. The paper shows that making could be used to teach design enabling the students to make judgments on their own and improvise.

Using the Engineering Design Process to Enhance Teaching and Learning in a Fab Lab
Audit 2B

The Fab Lab is the perfect environment to introduce students to the Engineering Design Process. The ability to digitally design a solution to a problem and then fabricate a prototype is at the heart of the Fab Lab experience. Engaging in the Engineering Design Process allows students to come face-to-face with failure in the context of testing the prototype and redesigning the solution. This workshop will help teachers use the Engineering Design Process to contextualize their Fab Lab projects and in turn make the Engineering Design Process come alive for their students.

1. Introduction to the eight steps of the Engineering Design Process
A. Ask
B. Identify Design Requirements
C. Imagine
D. Plan
E. Create
F. Test and Evaluate
G. Improve
H. Communicate
2. Example project developed in the Fab Lab
3. Connecting the Fab Lab project to each of the steps in Engineering Design Process

Build, Tinker, Hack: Fostering Student Agency by Developing a Sensitivity to Design through Maker-Centered Learning
Audit. 2A

In this interactive workshop session, researchers and practitioners from Project Zero’s Agency by Design initiative will present a series of hands-on activities aimed at promoting student agency in the maker-centered classroom, a concept that they refer to as “maker empowerment.” Central to achieving a sense of maker empowerment is having a sensitivity to the design of one’s world. Using thinking routines developed by the Agency by Design project, participants will consider what it means to develop a sensitivity while making connections to their home teaching and learning environments.

Educational initiatives that emphasize making, engineering, and tinkering are becoming increasingly popular in K-12 education. But what is really worthwhile about design and maker-centered learning? While many have pointed to the STEM outcomes associated with this work, others see greater potential in fostering dispositional outcomes such as student agency and character building through design and maker-centered learning. In this interactive workshop session, researchers and practitioners from Project Zero’s Agency by Design initiative will present a series of hands-on activities aimed at promoting student agency in the maker-centered classroom, a concept that they refer to as “maker empowerment.” Central to achieving a sense of maker empowerment is having a sensitivity to the designed dimensions of one’s world. Using thinking routines developed through the Agency by Design project, participants will consider what it means to develop a sensitivity while having an opportunity to make connections to their home teaching and learning environments.

Tactile Assisted Design : Working with Non-Sighted Students to turn CAD into TAD
Audit 2B

Fab Lab Carnegie Science Center reaches out to bring digital fabrication technologies to students in and around the Pittsburgh area through our Mobile Fab Lab Program. Fab Lab CSC’s Mobile educational programming reaches over 10,000 students per year with our two mobile fab labs. Developing workshops and programming for special populations is a priority for the lab as we work towards inclusive experiences for all. Come hear about our journey of developing, prototyping, delivering, and re-inventing a digital fabrication workshop for students who are visually impaired. Though this program is still quite young, we are excited to share our experiences, failures, and successes so far. Collaborative discussion is welcome, so come prepared to share your lab’s experience in reaching this population.

Making Meaning Mindfully: Developing fab labs to improve the learning environment for all students
Audit. 2B

Digital design and fabrication hold tremendous potential for learning. The technologies enable more access to the deep ideas underlying the curriculum as well as felicitous opportunities for the development of essential socio-emotional characteristics.

Achieving the potential benefits for all students is not merely a matter of installing a lab. Not only must we develop new materials, but we also need to develop new models for schooling based on computation and fab.

We will investigate:
What is now possible?
What are the deep ideas in learning through digital design and fabrication?
How to connect the making to the learning?
What do we need to do to bring such powerful learning potential to all students everywhere?
What are the primary obstacles to enabling such powerful environments for all?
What are the best strategies for implementation in and transformation of learning environments?
What new models for learning through making can we develop?
