218 Sustainable Fab Lab Goals / Objetivos de Fab Labs Sostenibles' (bilingual)
After "Fab Lab Life Cycle" workshops on setting-up and running a fablab at four FAB-conferences and Fab Lab Safety Game sessions during two, it is time for the next level: the Sustainable Fab Lab Goals.* Countries of the world agreed on 17 Sustainable Development Goals to be completed by all in 2030. Fab labs of the world could use them as a global framework to identify where we could make a difference. This helps clarify our potential impact on local, regional or global scale. It helps us to align our social activities and makes our labs and the whole more sustainable itself as well. Where sustainable development goals and sustainable fab lab goals coincide, new opportunities for structural cooperation and sustainable funding emerge. Come and join us in this bilingual workshop! * Fab Lab Life Cycle and Fab Lab Safety Game documentation is free to download via http://bit.ly/fablabonline. Results of the new workshop will follow.

Strategies for Resilience in the FabLab Network
23B1 Auditorio 3B This workshop series will help you to make your fab lab more inclusive and comfortable for everyone. We work with many different kinds of people every day within the local fab lab and the virtual fab lab – with refugees and migrants, people from a variety of cultures, ages, genders and sexual orientation. These experiential workshop series will help you promote a culturally safer environment for your whole fab community. These workshops are designed to increase participant’s knowledge of traumatic stress, its possible impact on children, adults, and project based learning. This training has been created in collaboration with Wendy Neale from FabLab WGTN, Jean Luc Pierite from Fab Foundation, and Victor Jose Santana from VJS Consulting. The workshop will explore tools and frameworks that participants can apply to their fab lab programs, activities and or communities.

Fab Lab Management Best Practices
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Managing a Fab Lab is a lot of work. Every lab develops its own practices and many repeat the same mistakes. As Fab Labs are scaling from 1,000 to 1,000,000 in the coming years it is crucial to learn from each other so that this movement has a lasting effect on society.
We want to share know-how and exchange best practices of running a Fab Lab. Furthermore, we present Fabman, a cloud-based tool we developed at Happylab to reduce the work load on lab managers and increase safety.
See how the system works and get access to the cloud. For the workshop, we will work together with Jens Dyvik and show how to integrate his self-built Open Source machine into Fabman.

A Global Stakeholder Map of Fab Labs: New Results
Audit. 3A

In preparation for the book, Designing Reality, co-authored by Neil Gershenfeld, Alan Gershenfeld, and Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld, we conducted a global survey of fab labs. We have received responses from over 175 fab leaders. This workshop will present results from the survey -- identifying opportunities and pain points in the eco-system. Best time to present would be on Thursday, August 3rd.

Bringing Your Product to Life on Kickstarter
ROOM 8

Kickstarter offers designers, makers, and engineers a unique opportunity to connect with an audience and raise funds to bring their projects to life. We’ll hear from Zach Dunham, Design and Technology Outreach Lead, about best practices for crafting a great campaign and building community on Kickstarter.

We'll begin by looking at several recent Kickstarter digital fabrication campaigns, from waterjet cutters to digital knitting machines, and look at how the founders built a following around their idea, and shared their stories. Then we'll explore the core steps involved in planning, building, and managing your own Kickstarter campaign.
After attending this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Develop a plan for a Kickstarter campaign
  • Create an outline for a campaign story
  • Identify assets to bring a product to life
  • Build a plan for community and press outreach

Research Workshop on FabLabs & private sector : models and lever for collaborations
ROOM 6

The main purpose of the Workshop is to identify organizational models that may foster “healthy” collaborative dynamics with the private sector. In order to do that we’ll have for a goal to: - Share experiences of collaborations with the private sector and identify good practices and current traps. - Establish typologies of private actors FabLabs interact with and of the nature of the relationships they develop It will be leaded in benevolence with participative tools so that every participants finds it’s place as the workshop is efficient. Results will be shared and the workshops reproduced at FAB14 to have a continuum of datas.

Doctoral consortium of digital fabrication and soft prototyping
Place: Audit. 3A
Working Group: 3H

Doctoral consortium of digital fabrication and soft prototyping provides an opportunity for doctoral students and young researchers to explore and develop their research interests as well as share experience in the academy around digital fabrication, surfaces, organic materials, bio-inspired design, machines and the implications of Human Computing Interaction (HCI). This consortium encourages participants to discuss the development of educational strategies through making and to think how these practices can guide new approaches in digital fabrication that encompasses the impact of today's prototyping. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their dissertation work to apply for this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. While we encourage applications from students at any stage of doctoral training, the doctoral consortium will benefit most the students who are in the process of forming or developing their doctoral research. Participation of students from all over the world and especially from latin american countries is hoped.

Key points include: Research objectives/goals/questions Background/literature review of key works that frames your research Hypothesis/thesis and/or problem statement Current and expected contributions Short Curriculum Vitae

Funding and Sustainability
ROOM 8

Funding and sustainability is hard and difficult. We have built and operated 2 labs, proposal to build number 3 and supported in the build and operation of 9 more, closed one, migrating to a new model by reacting to market changes - this is about sharing the learning and how diversity means strategy and planning are very difficult at best but how these challenges can be faced and accepted.
