Audit. 2A

In this interactive workshop session, researchers and practitioners from Project Zero’s Agency by Design initiative will present a series of hands-on activities aimed at promoting student agency in the maker-centered classroom, a concept that they refer to as “maker empowerment.” Central to achieving a sense of maker empowerment is having a sensitivity to the design of one’s world. Using thinking routines developed by the Agency by Design project, participants will consider what it means to develop a sensitivity while making connections to their home teaching and learning environments.

Educational initiatives that emphasize making, engineering, and tinkering are becoming increasingly popular in K-12 education. But what is really worthwhile about design and maker-centered learning? While many have pointed to the STEM outcomes associated with this work, others see greater potential in fostering dispositional outcomes such as student agency and character building through design and maker-centered learning.
