Using the Emotiv Epoc+ neuroheadset we will elicit a movement response in paramecia. These microorganisms have a specific locomotion mechanism called 'galvanotaxis', which is why they move toward the cathode when exposed to an electrical field. Thus, for our setup we are putting an array of electrodes in direct contact with the paramecia medium, allowing us to reconfigure it programmatically and control the direction of the paramecia movement at our will.
For the workshop we are creating a custom 3d-printed container that will facilitate the visualization of the microorganisms through a portable digital microscope connected to a computer. Using software libraries we will create a videogame interface for using the paramecia as our main character.
The purpose of this workshop is to put the science exploration closer to the common citizen and inspire the next generation of bio curious and DIY biologists.
